Machine Description
The 7 Station Rotary Washing Machine is designed to wash OP40 Intermediate Cylinder Heads and uses filtered wash solution from the machine reservoir, which is automatically kept full of wash solution. The machine provides three general washes. The cleaning process is fully automatic incorporating programmable washing and drying driven by servo controlled encoded motors. The cylinder heads are mounted on adaptor plates, and are loaded from and to the roller conveyor using a pick & place gantry unit at the front of the machine.
Component Route Through the Machine
- Station 1 – Load / Unload A clean cylinder head is removed from the machine by the gantry unit and put on the unload roller conveyor. A dirty cylinder head is then taken from the feed automation and put in the machine and starts the wash process as it is indexed into Station 2.
- Station 2 -Wash Target washing is achieved using a continuous manifold which travels along the length of the component and fixture creating a full curtain of wash jetting around the head as the manifold moves along the length of the part. The manifold is supported by a carriage on a MBL1 linear drive unit. The carriage is pulled along the guides of the drive unit by a belt which is driven by a servo controlled encoder motor driving the belt drive sprocket. Wash jets on the manifold are precisely positioned to target specific features of the head and using the servo motor they are precisely positioned for washing the features being targeted. Fixed end manifolds are positioned to a general wash for the ends of the head as it arrives in station.
- Station 3 - Wash Station 3 is a repeat of wash station 2
- Station 4 - Wash Station 4 is a repeat of wash station 2
- Station 5 – Drain and Dry Station 5 uses a rollover unit to assist with draining the interior of the cylinder head, releasing wash solution trapped in the casting features. The gripper unit is lowered and positioned at a height, once the part is indexed into station, to allow the gripper to collect the part. The unit gripper system will clamp the adapter plate carrying the head which is then lifted and rotated as it is dried in front of rows of fixed air nozzles.
- Station 6 - Dry Target drying is achieved using a continuous manifold which travels along the length of the component and fixture creating a full curtain of air, from the centrifugal fans, around the head as the manifold moves along the length of the part. The manifold is supported from a carriage on a MBL1 linear drive unit. The carriage is pulled along the guides of the drive unit by a belt which is driven by a servo controlled encoder motor driving the belt drive sprocket. The fish tail drying jets on the manifold are precisely positioned to target specific features of the head and using the servo motor they are positioned for drying the features being targeted. Fixed end manifolds are positioned to a general drying for the ends of the head as it arrives in station.
